Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human Unity.
The concept of Auroville was created by the Mother as early as 1930. In the mid of the 1960s the Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondichery proposed to her that the township should be started with Integral Yoga as a focus. She gave her blessings. The concept was put before the Govt. of India, who backed the idea and the UNESCO, who passed it as project of importance to the future of humanity, giving Auroville their full encouragement.
The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity – in diversity.

It is recognized as the first and only internationally endorsed ongoing experiment in human unity and transformation of consciousness, also concerned with sustainable living and the future of cultural, environmental, social and spiritual needs of mankind.
Auroville started on 28th of February 1968 in an inauguration ceremony attended by representatives of 124 nations.
At this point the Mother gave Auroville its four point Charter.
Today around 2500 Aurovilians from some 49 nations from all age groups, social classes, backgrounds and cultures live in the township.
At the very center of the city one finds the ‘soul of the city’, the Matrimandir. It is surrounded by beautiful Gardens, which have a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. The name 'Matrimandir' means literally 'Temple of the Mother'. According to Sri Aurobindo's teaching, the 'Mother' concept stands for the great evolutionary, conscious and intelligent principle of Life, the Universal Mother, - which seeks to help humanity move beyond its present limitations into the next stage of its evolutionary adventure, the supramental consciousness. Inside the Matrimandir is the Inner Chamber, which is used for concentration, no fixed meditations, but a place filled with silence.
“A place for trying to find one’s consciousness” (The Mother).
